Landscape Management Plans: Back to Top

For Natural Areas and Traditional Landscapes

Landscape Management Plans prepared by SED Design guide your site’s management with cost effective and environmentally sound techniques.  Our Landscape Management Plans are designed to enhance the value of your property and quality of your landscapes.  We work closely with our clients to address both their immediate needs as well as the long term care for maintaining sustainable landscapes.   Our management plans utilize Plant Health Care (PHC) programs and Ecological Management strategies for traditional landscapes with discriminating requirements and   natural areas, like meadows, woodlands and wetlands, to enhance the environmental value of your site.

Woodlands
Woodlands, an important part of many regional landscapes, are composed of many different plant communities including many diverse species.   Woodlands require unique planning to maintain their quality and health   Often woodlands are compromised by aggressive non native species.   In many situations these invasive species displace preferred native plants.   Management plans by SED Design consider the reproductive strategies of each plant to create the best management plan.  Replanting with appropriate native species, specific to the individual community, plays an important role in the long term stability of the woodlands.

Meadows
Meadows are herbaceous communities of wildflowers and grasses.   When properly managed these open landscapes offer tremendous wildlife habitat.   The reduced maintenance cost of meadows over traditional landscapes makes meadows an important tool in designing cost effective management plans.  Quality management plans for meadows recognize the importance of the establishment period as well as long term techniques required to sustain a balanced ecosystem.

Wetlands
Wetlands ranging from Riverine systems, such as perennial streams and smaller ephemeral swales, to Palustrine wetlands, such as floodplains and wet meadows, require special understanding and care.   Wetlands are often compromised by changing hydrology in the area particularly due to increased runoff and erosion.  Management planning by SED Design includes studying the local hydrology to create stable wetlands that perform the greatest ecological functions.

Traditional Landscapes
The care of traditional landscapes including lawns and cultivated gardens and plantings in an environmentally sensitive way is an important part of our management plans.  Eliminating or reducing a dependency on the indiscriminant use of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides is vital to a sound management plan.  Our management plans utilize Plant Health Care (PHC) and the highest cultural practices to meet the needs of traditional landscapes.

Arboriculture
Arboriculture plans recognize that trees in the landscape add significant social and ecological benefits and value to the property.   Our management plans anticipate the long term replacement of trees as well as their immediate care in order to maintain the character of the landscape that trees so importantly define.

Commissioning Services

SITES is the leading environmental stewardship certification program to preserve and enhance the ecological functions of our built landscapes. SITES is sponsored jointly by the ASLA, the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center and the United States Botanic Garden.

SITES standards will protect and enhance our natural resources including air, soil and water as well as the cultural and aesthetic quality of the landscapes in which we live.

SED Design is proud to be participating in the Sustainable SITES initiative and is able to provide the leadership to assist you and your organization in achieving SITES certification.

Our knowledge of the SITES program makes SED Design the right choice to prepare the documentation required to achieve your SITES certification.
