In the Schumacher Garden, garden architecture defines outdoor living areas and harmoniously integrates indoor and outdoor spaces. Architectural seat walls and trellises are an extension of the building, forming the boundaries of “halfrooms,” or outdoor spaces defined partly by architecture and partly by landscape elements. The main terrace on an upper level of the garden takes advantage of dramatic views across a distant landscape. Its location flows seamlessly into the interior living spaces on the main level of the home.
Unique features of the design are incorporated through the creative use of stormwater. Stormwater runoff from the main terrace flows to an open channel through the seat wall and spills into a pool on a lower level. Natural overflow from the pool enters a vegetated swale, promoting groundwater infiltration, a Best Management Practice for stormwater. The pool water is recirculated and is the source of the tranquil sound of cascading water heard throughout the garden.
This outdoor living space, designed for relaxation and entertainment, appeals to all the senses.
