In the Raymond Garden, a rich variety of outdoor rooms and experiences respond to the existing landscape and the programmatic needs of the client. Equally important, the grounds required more private outdoor living spaces, since the grand manor house is now surrounded on three sides by new townhouses. In a relatively small area, gardens, lawns, patios, a pergola, and a pond comprise outdoor rooms, positioned to flow from the indoors. Paths and steps connecting the lawns to the rear entrance, upper flagstone path, patio, pergola, and pond physically link spaces. Rectangular Pennsylvania Bluestone flags visually tie the spaces together, and complement an existing path and the stone of the home. A pergola-topped patio is adjacent to the pond, but set near the rear lot line to maximize the space between the house and a road.
The grade of the lawn is dropped 2 feet to create a central sunken lawn surrounded by lushly planted borders of flowers, trees, and shrubs. Unwanted subdivision views are effectively screened while the eye is brought back to the house and garden.
In this garden, a strong sense of enclosure is created, with transitions between individual spaces. The transitions provide enticing glimpses of the gardens beyond and a greater sense of depth in the overall landscape.
